Stella Cade’s work investigates the importance of ritual to process traumas. With gestural mark making and a vibrant palette, her work draws on personal memories and the verbal histories of others to create highly charged narratives with a focus on the quiet – the unacknowledged spaces that live between the action of life. The moments depicted are those typically unseen by others, and through their voyeurism create a dimension of unease in their intimacy. Showing moments of solitude and togetherness, her figures are often trying to connect, while missing slightly. Cade’s work offers an unguarded glimpse at the small actions we take to put our worlds back together after a tragedy, all the while seeking to demystify the processes of psychic healing.
Oreka James’ current body of work investigates black identity using the mundane as vehicle to explore the softer ways black women exist in the world.
Claudia Zloteanu tells the story of her everyday life through the creation of sculpture. A series of decisions and choices, some instinctive and some carefully thought through, all happens simultaneously, culminating in a single point. Zloteanu use everyday materials to explore the notion of space and language, where traces of industry and nature become visible.
Stella Cade studied at the Art Students League, Concordia University, and received her BFA from OCADU in 2013. Her abstracted figuration seeks to investigate themes of trauma, intimacy, and autonomy. Cade was presented with the People's Choice Award at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition in 2011, and The Donna Maclean Award for portraiture and representational painting from OCADU in 2013. She is the Co-Founder of NEST Collective, and most recently had a solo exhibition at 26 in November 2016.
