Mark Gomes was born in Sarnia in 1949. He has an extensive, thirty-year record for exhibiting his sculptures and installations, well documented in a series of catalogues and publications. He has shown both nationally and internationally, including: the Cenci Gallery, Rome, Italy; the Freedman Gallery Albright College, Reading Pennsylvania; and ARCO, Madrid, Spain. His work resides in several private collections and the public collections of: the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and the Department of Foreign Affairs. Gomes has developed many public art projects, using a wide variety of materials including: wood, plastic, metal, and marble. Collaborating with artist Susan Schelle, he has received several public commissions, such as the Bloor/Spadina Art Park, the Allen Subway Station, and most recently, a sculptural installation, “jetstream,” for Terminal One, Pearson International Airport (Toronto). Along with artist John Broere, Gomes co-founded the design firm Box Design Build.
